One can never have a favorite book, its like choosing your favorite child among the 10 you have (metaphorically speaking. And no, I don’t have ten children). This is going be the first part of many and maybe we do have things is common.
I love the novel North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. The title may sound very boring but the content is quite the opposite. A girl and her family forced to move from Southern England, leaving behind greenery and garden parties to a rough industrial Milton where black smog is order of the day. And of course she has to meet some dashing industrialist who does not approve of her daintiness. I have to say that this novel is far from cheesy and if you’re looking for gooey romance, then this is not for you. Sorry Ladies. There is a lot of struggle within the working class society who try to make ends meet while giving their sweat and blood, while trying to hold on to their rights. If you like books about social struggle between the rich and the poor, in an “animal farmish” kind of way and throw in a bit of romance, then this is for you.
But if you really hate reading then you can look out for BBC’s TV mini-series on this Novel, starring Richard Armitage and Daniella Denby- Ashe. It’s really good, you can stare at Richard all you want and the music is just great.
